CANINE CARE AT KINGSBROOK ANIMAL HOSPITAL
Annual wellness exams for your dog are the best way to keep your pet as healthy as possible. Bringing your dog in for regular wellness exams is the very best you can do to assure longer life and the highest quality of life for your companion.
CANINE VACCINATIONS
One of the most important components of your dog’s health care is vaccinations. However, many vaccines may neither be necessary nor prudent for your pet to receive. At Kingsbrook Animal Hospital, we conduct a risk analysis of your pet each time they visit to determine what, if any, vaccines are needed. Each patient’s lifestyle (based on their activities and factors such as age, breed, medical history and risk) is taken into consideration to create a plan which is tailored to your pet’s needs. These factors may change over time, so it’s best to review your pet’s vaccination plan during each wellness exam. We also offer alternatives to vaccines when possible, such as titers, to see if protection is still being provided from vaccines you pet has received in the past.
PARASITE PREVENTION & CONTROL
Internal and external parasites can pose a serious health risk to both your dog and your family. During the wellness exam, our veterinarians will conduct a fecal analysis to ensure that your dog is parasite-free. We can also give you recommendations on the safest and most effective monthly preventative medications for fleas, ticks, and heartworm disease for your dog and family.
NUTRITION & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
We will discuss your dog’s diet and weight at each exam to ensure they are getting the nutrition they need and are maintaining a healthy weight for their age and breed. It is important to review these facts as nutritional deficiencies and significant changes in weight could indicate an underlying health condition.
Recent information has given rise to concerns about feeding grain free diets. There is increasing evidence linking these diets to a form of heart disease in dogs. The FDA, Tufts University, UC Davis, CVCA and others continue research regarding these concerns. Please visit our Grain-Free Food page for more information about grain-free diets and your dog.
DENTAL EVALUATION
Kingsbrook Animal Hospital provides professional dental cleanings to help keep your dog’s teeth clean and healthy. During the dental evaluation, we will inspect your dog’s teeth and gums for tartar, plaque, tooth decay, infections, and signs of tooth weakness. We can also discuss at-home dental care, and the various methods for maintaining your dog’s oral health between cleanings. Visit our dental care page to learn more.
