Behavioral Resources
Whether you're looking for private or group training for your puppy or adult dog, Smart Dog University is your best option. Their trainers only use positive reinforcement training, which is not only fun for you and your canine companion, but teaches them without any scolding or punishment. For your convenience, some classes are held at our hospital!
Right Start Maryland Dog Training also only utilizes positive reward-based training, making their classes fun and relaxed for both your dog and you. In addition to group classes and private lessons, they also offer a 3 week 'humans only' class in case your dog doesn't travel well. Group classes are held at the Frederick County Humane Society.
Behavioral problems are some of the most challenging conditions that we see. They can include destructive behavior, anxiety, phobias (such as thundersorm or other noises), inappropriate urination and/or defecation and even agression. Dr. Meyers at the Veterinary Behavior Clinic offers help for cats and dogs suffering from behavior problems, using environmental manipulation, behavior modification, and, when necessary, medication.
The Indoor Cat Initiative is a must read web site for folks who are new to having cats as well as those who have had cats for years. This resource checklist was developed to enrich the lives of indoor cats and was prepared by The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Patricia McConnel is an animal behaviorist who has a website with wonderful dog training tips. She used to host NPR's radio show, 'Calling All Pets' which was Dr. Cardella's favorite radio program.
This is the Feline Advisory Bureau, based out of the UK. The articles on feline diseases are excellent and they also have information on general cat health, diet, etc.
The Animal Behavioral Resources Institute is a non-profit organization where leading professional in animal behavior and training can share their expertse & experiences. Their website has articles & videos on a variety of behavioral topics. It is well worth a visit for any pet owner!
