Pet Health Tips
Tips on Traveling with pets

Flying with your pet:

  • Obtain a physical exam and health certificate for your pet according to your airlines regulations
  • Sedation is often not recommended, check with us to see if your pet is an exception.

Driving with your pet:

  • Use carriers or harnesses to "Buckle them in:"
    • Some carriers have seatbelt adapters
    • It is unsafe for pets to be loose in the car, for them and you!
  • Make frequent rest stops: dogs should be walked and all pets should have access to fresh water!
  • Motion sickness:
    • medication is available that can control nausea
    • desensitization training: multiple small trips in the car ahead of time
  • DO NOT LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED IN THE CAR!
  • Many hotels and motels allow pets to stay with you, some may charge an additional fee

Identification to insure the return of lost pets:

  • Identification tags should be worn by all pets
  • When traveling, make temporary tags with travel address and emergency contact information.
  • Permanent identification: microchips and tatoos
  • Have a current picture of your pet in case you need to make lost pet signs

Tips for boarding or pet sitting:

  • Recommendations for kennels:
    • Get references for good kennels from friends, neighbors or vets
    • Make sure vaccinations are up to date
    • Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccination is a must for dogs!
    • Bring your petŐs own food (or make sure kennel has same food)
    • Remember that kennels can be stressful for some dogs and can be great fun for others. If your dog is stressed by kenneling, consider a pet sitter instead.
  • House sitting/Pet sitting:
    • Less stress for some pets (especially cats)
    • Make sure you schedule adequate visits for your petŐs needs
    • Many services are bonded and insured

Leave contact information when traveling without your pets:

  • Where you are staying: phone numbers, room numbers, etc.
  • Have an emergency contact person. Someone who can make medical decisions for pets, make sure they have the phone number for the animal hospital.
